NEW SECONDARY SCH. PRINCIPALS: PERFORM OR LOSE POSITION - PPSMB PERM. SEC
A two day exhortation session/workshop for newly appointed principals of public secondary schools in Enugu State has been held at the state Post Primary Schools Management, PPSMB Headquarters Enugu with a warning that any of them who fails to perform will be removed as principal
The Perm. Sec. PPSMB, Dr. Favour Ugwuanyi mni, gave the warning while addressing the principals at the beginning of the event.
She explained that the workshop was not meant to stress them but to equip them for better performance. "You will have reason to be grateful to God because you will perform above board to the disappointment of those who will want you to fail," she stated.
The Perm. Sec. emphasised that she was very interested in their excelling in their duties because she personally signed their appointment letters and would not want to be associated with failure which was not in her character.
Dr. Ugwuanyi announced that there would be more of such workshops/trainings for principals of public secondary schools in Enugu State this year, saying, "if you pay attention to the trainings, you will become champions. You stand to gain a lot from the job trainings."
The resource person, a Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Barr. Emma Ome told the new principals that as leaders they had an enormous duty to nurture children to become better human beings who would be useful to the society, adding, "as principals, you are agents of human development."
He stated that leadership required ability and capacity to achieve results. "A leader is one who influences action, challenge, educate or convince a group or an individual to think, to act, to do something not coarse or intimidate." he maintained.
Prof. Ome explained that their influence as principals/leaders was in three folds - the students, the teachers and the host communities.
He stressed the importance of effective communication with relevant stakeholders, describing it as the key to organisational success and urged them to make it a priority to excel in their duties.
Prof. Ome emphasised the need for them to be meek/humble, humane, empathetic and righteous, qualities he said, would help them in the task ahead of them.
Various directors of PPSMB Departments took turns to explain to the new principals what were expected of them for effective delivery on their mandate.
They included the Director of Schools Supervision Department, Dr. Ezekiel Onah; Director of Finance & Accounts Department, Mr. Bonaventure Odenigbo;
Director of Administration Department, Alhaji Mohammed Audu; Director of Planning, Research and Statistics Department, Chukwuemeka Ndum, Director of Science and Technology Department, Engr. Mrs. Edith Eze and Director of Sports Department, Mrs. Justina Onuchukwu.
The rest were Mr. N. J. Ozioko of Investigation, Property and Preservation Unit, Barr. Mrs. Ifesinachi of Legal Unit, Mrs. Maureen Ify Dunu of SERVICOM Unit, Mrs. JoyFrances Agbala of Central and Secret Registry Unit and Mr. Nnamdi Anya of Works Department.
Some of the principals who spoke confirmed that the workshop was worthwhile as it exposed and equipped them for better performance.
They commended the Perm. Sec. PPSMB, Dr. Favour Ugwuanyi for organising the training and the resource person, Prof. Emma Ome as well as PPSMB directors and unit heads for a job well done.
