Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State says the quality of future leaders in any nation depends on the quality of students produced by secondary schools.
The governor made the assertion in a message during the opening of a three day capacity building workshop for principals of public secondary schools in Enugu state with the theme,"Principals &Youths Development in secondary schools in Enugu state: Rebuilding for a Better Future".
The workshop organized by the Enugu state Post Primary Schools Management Board, PPSMB in partnership with the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS,kuru Jos Plateau State and sponsored by the Enugu state Government is taking place at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu.
Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze Rt.Hon.Dr. Ugwuanyi emphasized that no nation progressed without quality education.
Prof.Eze described the work shop as "very important human development programme which is dear to the heart of the governor " as the principals are field marshals making sure that government education policies are carried out effectively."
He commended NIPSS for the partnership which he noted would empower the principals to perform better. According to him, "no matter what funds is provided ,if not managed well,it is a waste".
The commissioner stressed that the workshop was aimed at equipping the principals to deliver in leadership and management, commending NIPSS for the partnership and the Perm. Sec. PPSMB, Dr. Favour Ugwuanyi mni for her achievements in the board and secondary schools in Enugu state.
Earlier while welcoming the resource persons and participants in the workshop , the Perm. Sec. Dr Favour Ugwuanyi mni said the workshop was the first of its kind in this part of the country.
" Government has remembered you and called you for training and brain storming. This is because of the love of the governor for you and education ", She told the principals.
She stated that the governor sending her to NIPSS for a one year training had increased her capacity to work and urged the principals to take the knowledge they would gain to their schools and communities and expressed gratitude to Governor Ugwuanyi for the opportunity.
Team leader of the resource persons, Prof. Oluwafunmilayo Para-Mallam said NIPSS recognised the critical importance of education and had done some studies on it,nothing that the sector had been neglected by previous governments.
She commended the Enugu state government for the workshop, the Perm. Sec. PPSMB, Dr. Favour Ugwuanyi mni who she said NIPSS was proud of because of her achievements and urged the principals to be focused to gain maximally from the workshop.
Three lectures were delivered on the first day of the workshop. They were on 'Building Leadership and Decision Making Skills of Education Managers in Nigeria" by Director of Research NIPSS, Prof. Dung Pam Sha, "Sustaining Strategic Leadership Amidst Resource constraints", by Air Vice Marshal, Uche Nwagwu and "Stress Management for Education Managers" by the Director of Studies NIPSS, Prof. Oluwafunmilayo Para-Mallam.
